Why Cahaya

A Measured Approach to Family Law

We work at the pace your circumstances require — not at the pace of external pressure.

Private by Design

Every consultation is held in a confidential setting. Matters discussed remain between counsel and client, and written records are handled with care.

Unhurried Process

Family matters carry weight. We resist unnecessary haste and prioritise a pace that allows for informed decisions and considered responses.

Child-Centred Outlook

Where children are involved, their wellbeing is treated as the primary consideration — not an afterthought — in every stage of proceedings.

Clear Communication

Legal language is translated into plain terms. Clients receive written summaries, regular updates, and direct access to their adviser throughout.

Civil & Syariah Competence

Cahaya advises across both civil and Syariah family law jurisdictions — relevant for Malaysia's diverse family circumstances and multi-faith households.

Mediation-First Where Appropriate

When circumstances allow, we encourage resolution through mediation before formal proceedings — often a less adversarial path for all involved.

Begin When You Are Ready

A Private Conversation Costs Nothing but Time

If you are uncertain where to begin, a quiet consultation is the right first step. There is no pressure to proceed further until the approach feels right for your situation.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

These are questions that often arise in a first conversation. If yours is not listed, we welcome you to reach out directly.

What happens in the first consultation?
The first consultation is a private, unhurried conversation about your situation. We listen carefully, answer your questions, and — where appropriate — outline possible paths forward. A written summary is provided afterwards for your reference. There is no obligation to proceed further.
Can Cahaya handle matters under Syariah jurisdiction?
Yes. Cahaya advises on family law matters under both civil and Syariah jurisdiction. For Muslim clients, many family proceedings — including divorce and custody — fall under Syariah courts, and we are experienced in guiding clients through both frameworks.
How long does a divorce or custody matter typically take?
Timelines vary considerably depending on the circumstances, whether matters are contested, and the court calendar. Uncontested matters may conclude within a few months; contested proceedings can extend longer. We will give you a realistic assessment once we understand your situation.
What are the fees, and how are they structured?
An initial consultation is RM 255 and includes a written summary. Representation matters begin from RM 705, with the total depending on scope and duration. Our Continuing Family Counsel Programme is RM 1,390 for an annual arrangement. Fees are discussed openly before any engagement begins.
Is everything discussed kept strictly confidential?
Yes. All matters discussed with Cahaya are subject to legal professional privilege. Nothing shared in a consultation is disclosed to any third party without your explicit consent, except as required by law.
Can Cahaya assist with pre-marital or post-marital agreements?
Yes. We can advise on and assist with the preparation of pre-marital and post-marital agreements, including their legal standing under Malaysian law and their practical scope. These are discussed during the initial consultation.
